Q 1 What is J-OS(Japan online school)?
J-OS is an online Japanese language school.
We offer private Japanese lessons with qualified Japanese teachers at a low price
using internet messenger systems.
Since classes can be taken at home even busy people can take our lessons.

Q 2 What is the difference between an online school and a usual school?
You don't have to go to school and can take a Japanese lesson with your PC
in your house. Since it is a private lesson, you can take a more substantial lesson than that of a group lesson.

Q 3 I feel like talking directly with teachers. I'm afraid online lessons may have many problems.
Since webcams are used, gestures are visible; therefore we think there are no functional demerits.
If you have a friend who has a webcam, we recommend you try theirs before you buy one.
Web-cams are very convenient and can be used in your private life to speak to friends and family.

Q 4 From what country are there many students?
So far, [Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Hong Kong, Iran,Israel, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Thailand, U.K.(United Kingdom),U.S.A. and so on.(alphabetical order)]. Compared with other Japanese schools, it seems that the use by business people is high. Moreover, since it is a private Japanese lesson, there is no interference with other students, so please feel at ease.

Q 5 How is a lesson carried out?
Connecting a webcam to your PC and using MSN Messenger or SKYPE, you can see your teacher and hear your teacher's voice using a headset, (and vice versa) so it's easy and like a TV phone.
At your scheduled time all you do is sign in to MSN Messenger or SKYPE, and wait for a message from your Japanese teacher.
When you receive the message, please push "Accept", and then it's the start of the lesson.

Q 6 What should be prepared?
Firstly,please prepare MSN Messenger or SKYPE.

Please check if your PC is WindowsXP or WindowsMe or Windows2000 or Windows98.
Mac, Windows95, and WindowsNT cannot be used as web-cams are so far not compatible with these systems.
Now SKYPE video chat can be used with Mac. For further information, please refer to SKYPE website.
And if your internet connection environment is Broadband.
Please prepare your web-cam and a headset (plug them into the relevant ports).
*Before you purchase tickets, you can have a connection test with our support staff.

Q 7 Are telephone charges included?
If your Internet charge is a fixed amount system, telephone charges will not be charged. If you are unsure please check with your service provider.

Q 8 Should I prepare MSN Messenger/SKYPE by myself?
Since the messenger operation manual is prepared for beginners, please utilize it.
Also you can ask us for E-mail support or Telephone support as well.

  about lesson times, and reservation

Q 9 How long is one lesson?
One lesson is 50 minutes and one ticket is consumed per lesson.
Longer lessons are also possible as long as you have available ticket(s),
We count 1 ticket for a 50 minute class, 1.5 tickets for a 75 minute class, 2 tickets for a 100 minute class, and so on.

Q 10 How shall I make a reservation?
Students of "j-01" service must reserve or cancel a lesson using our online reservation system. Students of "j-02" and "j-03" service may use E-mail and telephone as well as our reservation system.
**Telephone calls can only be accepted during our business hours.

Q 11 Can I have my desired reservation time each time?
Since other teachers are available and can take classes if your desired teacher is not available, in almost all cases, it is OK.

Q 12 What shall I do if I want to cancel a lesson?
Students of "j-01" service are to follow our procedure, using our reservation/cancellation system, at least 24 hours before the lesson.
Students of "j-02" and "j-03" service may use E-mail and telephone as well as our reservation system to cancel, at least 12 hours before the lesson.
**To cancel a lesson scheduled for a holiday or the day following a holiday via E-mail or telephone, either;
1) at least 12 hours before the scheduled lesson
2) before 8:00pm (20:00) Japan Time on the last business day before the holiday
Whichever is the earlier will be the deadline.
If you cancel your lesson in time, there will be no charge. However, if the cancellation is made after the deadline, we will count the relevant ticket.
Please note that frequent cancellations may result in your teacher being assigned to another student. You will receive a replacement teacher.

Q 13 How much is tuition?
Since it changes according to the type and amount of tickets you purchase, please check our price list.

Q 14 When should I pay tuition?
It is a prepayment system.
After purchasing tickets, you can take a lesson.

Q 15 Can I pay with a credit card?
Credit card is availabe with PayPal.
We also accept bank transfer.

Q 16 Is the textbook cost included in the tuition fee?
No, it is not included.
If a J-OS teacher recommends a textbook which you don't have and if you accept it, you will be required to purchase it by yourself.
If there is a specific textbook that you would like to use please ask us if any J-OS teachers also have that one.

Q 17 Is there any counseling after a lesson?
J-OS staff counsels in accordance with the student's wishes.
Of course, if you do not need this you can omit it.

Q 18 Can teachers speak my mother tongue?
At present, English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Thai etc are available.
Lessons are basically performed in Japanese. (* Direct method)
Since teachers have abundant experience, there are almost no students who have a lot of trouble.
If you want a bilingual teacher, please ask us which languages can be offered.

*(Direct Method):
Teaching directly using the target language without using the student's native language.

Q 19 Are teachers changed each time?
Almost all learners have chosen a favorite Japanese teacher for continuous lessons.
Of course, teachers can be changed if you get bored with the same person or feel you are not compatible, or are not feeling that you are getting what you need from your classes.
Priority is given to learners' wishes; however, due to some teachers' schedules, and convenience at the time of choice, it may not be possible to always set you up with your first choice.
Alternative Japanese teachers can also teach you well, because your level and lesson history are managed and recorded carefully so can be forwarded on to your next teacher.

Q 20 What people are J-OS teachers?
They are professional teachers who have received Japanese-language teaching training.
There are many teachers who have various careers, from people who have studied and live(d) overseas, and people who have had many social experiences. All our teachers however have had substantial Japanese language teaching experience.

Q 21 What can I do when I have an unknown word in a lesson?
You can check it in written form with your teacher and can understand it more certainly thanks to the typing function (chat function) in Messenger(SKYPE).

Q 22 Is there a textbook? Must I use it?
Although we usually decide the material we will use based on your level and request, your J-OS teacher may recommend a textbook which you don't have. You can choose whether or not to use this textbook.
If there is a specific textbook that you would like to use please ask us if any of J-OS teachers also have that one.

Q 23 I'm worried because I have not studied Japanese at all. Is it alright?

No problem at all.
In a beginners class, we teach carefully from fundamental greetings and words and we also teach you HIRAGANA so please do not worry.
If you are a complete beginner and want to use your tickets effectively we recommend you to learn and practice some simple words and grammar in-between your classes to get the maximum effect in your online conversation lesson.


Q 24 I'm not interested in studying Kanji.
That's fine. We also offer lessons which do not incorporate Chinese characters.

Q 25 Is there much homework?
There is no compulsory homework.
However, in order to advance efficient study, we recommend you to carry out preparation and review of your lessons. We are trying to reduce the time of checking homework in the lesson so as to use lesson time effectively.

Q 26 Do you have any lessons for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test?
Of course, we can tailor your classes to use exercises and preparation for the test intensively in your lessons.
Please supplement your study outside of class and then you can ask unknown points during your classes, and then your lessons will be very effective.

Q 27 What lessons are available for advanced students?
J-OS's teachers can respond to all levels from entire beginners to advanced students.
Since we believe advanced students comprehend to a high level, we offer lessons on special themes such as creation of business documents, the differences between honorific language and modest language etc. All classes are tailored to your needs and wants.

Q 28 Is a webcam difficult to use
Since the Messenger (SKYPE) operation manual is prepared for beginners, please utilize it.
It is easy once you get started.

Q 29 Where can I get the required equipment?
Any local PC shop, or online shop, etc will sell them.
If you tell the salesclerk "I'd like to buy a headset and a web-cam to use MSN Messenger/SKYPE" they will be able to give you information about them.

Q 30 Can Messenger(SKYPE) be used even though my pc is old?
If you are concerned about your connection, please check it with us in the connection test.

Q 31 Can Macintosh / Window95 / WindowsNT be used?
So far, web-cam functions using MSN Messenger / SKYPE cannot be used with Macintosh / Windows95 or WindowsNT.
Now SKYPE video chat can be used with Mac. For further information, please refer to SKYPE website.

Q 32 Can a notebook computer with a microphone be used?
We recommend that you use a headset, since the sound may echo if you use
the integrated microphone.
However, it still works so you can use a notebook PC with a microphone for lessons.

Q 33 I don't have a webcam. What should I do?
Please purchase this yourself from a computer shop, or purchase it direct from J-OS.
We recommend you use a web-cam, since the lesson can progress more comfortably if both people can see each other.However, if you are advanced learner, lessons which do not use a web-cam (where an image is not seen) are also possible.

Q 34 I have an ADSL connection - is this OK?
It is usually OK.
However we will have a connection test before a trial lesson, since occasionally, due to your computer and connection environment you may be unable to use it.

Q 35 Can I use a cable TV connection?
It depends on your apparatus such as your router, modem etc. which you use for connection to the Internet. Please ask your service provider for further details.
They can give you more information about this.

Q 36 What kind of router can be used?
Please use a USB type or a bridge type.
In the case where you cannot connect with us on your connection test, please ask the maker of your router or service provider for more details.

Q 37 Cancellation procedure
"Cooling-off System". A newly registered member can cancel the contract free of charge if the cancellation procedure is completed within 8 days, starting from the day after J-OS informs him/her of the completion of application (formation of the contract).
If J-OS receives the member's cancellation of the service after the first 8 days, J-OS shall refund purchased tickets as indicated below;
Unit price of tickets purchased X the number of remaining tickets - 10,000 yen
*J-OS will deduct 10,000 yen as a cancellation fee.
*J-OS will not refund the registration fee or the fee for the tickets used.
*Bank fees for any refunds are the sole responsibility of the member who is terminating the service.
